Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
“Sir,” said I, “or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you”—here I opened wide the door;
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore!”
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, “Lenore!”
Merely this, and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon I heard again a tapping somewhat louder than before.
“Surely,” said I, “surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore—
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore;—
‘Tis the wind and nothing more!”

Logo minha alma ficou mais forte; hesitando então não mais,
“Senhor”, disse eu, “ou Senhora, verdadeiramente seu perdão eu imploro;
Mas o fato é que eu estava cochilando e gentilmente você veio rap,
E tão fracamente você veio tocando, batendo na porta do meu quarto,
Que eu escassei com certeza ouvi você ”- lá abri a porta;
Escuridão lá e nada mais.

Profundamente nessa escuridão, perscrutando, por muito tempo eu fiquei ali imaginando, temendo,
Duvidando, sonhando sonhos que nenhum mortal jamais ousou sonhar antes;
Mas o silêncio não foi quebrado, e a escuridão não deu sinal,
E a única palavra ali falada foi a palavra sussurrada: “Lenore!”
Isso eu sussurrei, e um eco murmurou de volta a palavra “Lenore!”

De volta para a câmara girando, toda a minha alma dentro de mim queimando
Logo ouvi novamente uma batida um pouco mais alta que antes.
“Certamente”, disse eu, “certamente isso é algo na minha janela;
Deixe-me ver, então, o que há e esse mistério explorar
Deixe meu coração ser ainda um momento e este mistério explorar;
“É o vento e nada mais!”
